I was born on 8th May 1981 and started playing golf at the age of eight. As I grew up I developed a real passion for the game, turning professional in 1998. I live in Yerba Buena in the province of Tucuman in North West Argentina. I'm coached by my uncle, Miguel Romero. On many websites you will read that I was forced to give up my favourite hobby of monocycling when I turned professional as it was thought to be too dangerous a pastime! I never did monocycling, it was a mistake in the translation and should be mountain biking!
I have won three times in South America and once in Europe at the Morson International Pro-Am Challenge, en route to qualifying for the full European Tour taking the 14th card on offer through the final 2005 Challenge Tour Rankings.
The 2006 season was my first on the European Tour with four top tens including a share of second place behind Johan Edfors at The Barclays Scottish Open, Loch Lomand. I finished 35th on the Order of Merit. One of the great highlights of 2006 was partnering Angel Cabrera at the world championships in Barbados where we finished T5.
2007 was an amazing year for me. I came very close to winning The Open Championship at Carnoustie but in the end finished 3rd. But I was very delighted with this and the following week I won The Deutsche Bank Players’ Championship of Europe by three shots. In just two weeks I climbed from 114th to 29th in the World Rankings. Of course this opened many doors for me, not least giving me the opportunity to play in all the majors and the WGC events. My confidence was high and I finished the '07 season ranked number 7 on The European order of merit.
2008 was another great year for me. I committed to playing on the PGA Tour and to spending most of my time in the USA. It was a slow start with three missed cuts, but after winning the Zurich Championship in New Orleans, on my 12th PGA start, my confidence improved and I settled down into a good year. I made the cut in all 4 majors and finished T8th at Augusta on my first visit there (what a spectacular course!!!) and T7th at the PGA Championship. I also qualified for the TOUR Championship, where the 30 best players of the year played for the FEDEX Cup. I had a great year in the States, everyone was very kind and looked after us extremely well. At the end of the season I was voted PGA Rookie of the Year which was a great honour and I’m looking forward to an even better '09 season.
